Welcome to The Ark Association for Retired Pets

The Ark proudly announces the foundation of a new organization to honor and support our older animals:

AARP (Ark Association of Retired Pets)

In The Ark's "Golden Years" program, adoption fees are waived for pets eight years and older adopted by senior citizens 60 years and older. Now, all "Senior Citizen" pet adoptees receive a free lifetime membership in "AARP", complete with a membership certificate suitable for framing, a lifetime membership card, and a permanent photo listing on the Ark website's new "AARP" Membership Directory.

Here is Lorna Konyak, Ark shelter manager, with wonderful and loving older pets ready for new homes. All of our adopted pets go home with some free "goodies", including an educational DVD for owners, educational magazine, discount coupons, and sometimes other treats. Dogs receive a new collar and id tag, a Kong toy, and a four to five day supply of food.

Cats go home with fresh catnip pillows, a four lb. bag of food, and a coupon for a free bag of litter.

There are several good reasons to consider adopting an older pet. Older animals tend to be quieter and less active than youngsters. This may be a good match for quieter people.

Older pets need and deserve good homes, but are often passed over for younger animals. Those of us who are sensitive to "age discrimination" among people may choose to give a second chance to an older pet.

During Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month, take the opportunity to get acquainted with the older pets available at The Ark Animal Shelter. You'll find most of them listed on our Golden Years webpage, but there may be others at the shelter, who are not yet listed.
