Lais

Lais

How stinkin’ sweet! Meet Lais, a 3-month old mix who would love to pitter-patter her little paws all over your heart. She is very friendly, likes to jump, is full of puppy energy, and is all around very sweet! She might need supervision or proper behavioral training around meal times if she is with other dogs. Our dogs can’t tell us what they’ve been through, but she may have had to fight for her kibble in the past.

Charmaine

Charmaine

Charmaine is a beautiful and sweet 4 month old lab mix, who is good with other friendly pups and loves to play. She is waiting in style for her forever home and hoping you might be the one!

Maco

Maco

Macho is a very handsome lab mix waiting for his home. We would to dress him in a bow tie and hat, but we are sure he would chew it off. At  8 months old, he is very energetic, loves to play, is good with other friendly dogs, and although he is a . little shy with strangers at first, we feel he would come around quickly with the right people.

The Ark: Asking for Help in a Time of Need

The Ark: Asking for Help in a Time of Need

Dear Friends,

Due to COVID-19, the Ark is taking serious precautions to protect our employees and the public, but in turn facing some significant challenges. We realize that we are not alone in this devastating time, however we feel it necessary to inform our community and supporters of some of the ways that this situation has affected a non-profit animal shelter such as ourselves.

We at the Ark recognize the seriousness of COVID-19 pandemic and the role we must play in keeping the public safe. With this being said, the Ark is currently not open to the public, in turn drastically minimizing our donation intake and adoption rates. With safety measures in place due to this pandemic, however, life as we know it in the shelter continues to go on and needs continue to grow. We are currently caring for upwards of 28 dogs and 50+ felines. Some of our felines are facing upper-respiratory infections, and giving birth to kittens. Strict shelter management is playing a large role in keeping the shelter thoroughly sanitized and administering constant care to animals that aren’t feeling well.

Additionally, as animals affected by both human illness and our changing economy will need our support more than ever, and the Ark must and will persevere through these challenges. We will need additional support to do so. As determined by Hurricane Katrina, human and animal lives are seriously intertwined and the safety of humans is more supported when animals are part of this plan.

We spent a large amount of money on pet food last week to ensure that we would have enough food to feed our animals here at the shelter, should food become difficult to obtain. We are looking at the possibility of having to cut our employees hours should things continue to progress with COVIOD-19, employing only a bare-minimum “skeleton crew.”

As animal lovers who spend their time, life and energy ensuring permanency, care and safety to pets, there is nothing quite as devastating as the thought of taking a hit in this broad and comprehensive area. Just think: We were concerned about even being able to obtain food for our Ark pets.

At this time, the Ark is asking for the public’s support, donation wise. Any little bit will help us during this time. Donations will be used for general shelter operations. We can take cash donations outside pick-up, a check outside pick-up or mailed, or online donation via PayPal on our website thearkpets.org under the “donate” tab. If you do not feel like donating your money to the Ark, please consider one of the other shelters in our beautiful state during this time.

The Ark pets and myself would like to thank our community, our supporters, and our friends at this time for your compassion, understanding, and support. We hope you all stay safe during this time of need.

Sincerely,

Shaina R. Mugford

Shelter Administrator

Curly

Curly

Curly is looking for a forever home!
Curly is a happy, social 13 year old Miniature Poodle.  He loves people & is friendly.  This adorable pup is mostly housebroken, though he needs to go out frequently.  He has cataracts forming, and needs to have an eye lubricant applied twice daily.  He recently had a dental. He is placed as a foster at Jonesport: Home of the Ancients. To Make an appointment to meet Curly, please contact Shelter Administrator Shaina Mugford to set up a time to meet with him!
Baby

Baby

Baby is handsome, love-able, and super duper sweet! His favorite activities include purring, rubbing up against things, having his saggy belly touch the floor when he walks, and hanging out with his best friend Melman. Baby is eleven years old, but still very healthy with a lot of life left in him. We at the shelter don’t feel that eleven is “that old” for a cat, but he is still in our senior adoption category, so he could be a good fit for our Golden Years Program, if there are no younger folks interested in adopting this precious boy.  (Golden Years is when any senior animal who is matched up with a senior citizen 65 or older, that the adoption fee is waived). Please keep in mind, we still carefully review applications to ensure that you and he would be a good fit, and we would seek a donation for the adoption.

If you are interested in Baby, please give us a call!

Chloe, Sophie, and Ollie!

Chloe, Sophie, and Ollie!

Meet Chihuahua mixes and possible basset hound intertwined puppies! (L to R) Chloe, Sophie (females) and Ollie (male). They are stealing hearts all over town! At three-months old, these pups are pretty new to the world and ready to live a long, happy life. Come in today to meet them!

Spicy

Spicy

Spicy is a sweet Puerto Rican girl who will need to go home with someone who is dedicated to working with shy, timid and fearful dogs. She will need a chance to come out of her shell and trust you. Come in to meet her today!

Laica

Laica

Laica may be a toy thief and a bit of a bandit with stuffed animals, but she sure is pretty and she is just a little sweet heart. She is a lab mix marked with white and tan, and is about a year old. We would love for you to come meet her! Her ideal  home has plenty of toys, soft bedding, and no kitties.

Laica is currently placed in a foster home, and thankfully due to this placement, we have some very good insight as to how Laica has been doing in a home!

Laica has mastered “sit,” has almost mastered “stay,” is working on “down,” and almost 100% mastered “come.” She is also currently working on “off,” (she jumps because she is so excited) and is doing very well with “heel” (walking with her humans). She has done very well with the “no” word, and is working on shaking. She has mastered her potty training, loves to give kisses, play fetch, tug-o-war, plays well with other dogs, nibbles on people but does NOT hurt.

She is scared of fans and heaters (stove fan, furnace running, car heater) and will freeze or run the other way. She is a very good rider and sits on the floorboard during car rides.

If you are interested in adopting Laica, give us a call today and set up a time to meet with her!

Larimar

Larimar

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a….sausage? No, wait! It’s just Larimar, the cute sausage dog.

Larimar is a cute little girl, happy in every sense of the word and seems to get along well with just about everyone (furry and not furry)! She is shaped a bit like a dachshund with the paws of a basset hound and the face of a Chihuahua/golden retriever. We guess her to weigh around 20-23 pounds and seems to be a bit on the overweight side. She seems to enjoy the outside and doesn’t mind walking on a leash. She is going to make a family very happy some day, and we hope it’s soon! She gets very playful and opens her mouth when playing, exhibiting a “puppy nibble.” It is not rough, but she is just trying to tell you that she loves you and you taste delicious. Her DOB is 2/26/2015.

Bella

Bella

Bella is looking for you to be her heart, soul, and savior. With her precious looks and dynamic personality, she will win you over on your worst of days. Bella needs a quiet home environment with someone who is patient and understanding. Bella is a “door darter,” and will try to escape when you open the door, so she will need someone vigilant and quick on their toes, who is willing to work with her on this unfavorable behavior. She tends to get over-stimulated, and would thrive in a home where she gets a lot of one-on-one attention without a lot of other pets. She barks a lot, and tends to act like a tornado in the bath tub. Perhaps with time, patience, and an understanding owner, she may begin to love bubble baths like the princess that she is! She is great with cats (other then yelling at them sometimes) and does great riding in a car seat (but she yells about that too sometimes). Please call the shelter today to ask about 3-year old yorkie, Bella!

Two Male Rats for Adoption (Holy CUTENESS)!

Two Male Rats for Adoption (Holy CUTENESS)!

Big Mickey Mouses (Mickey Mice? Mickey MEECE?) We digress…Anyway…they are AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! (AKA Rats). It doesn’t take much to convince this shelter staff how wonderful rats are as pets. We simply love ’em! Rats are smart, easy to train, and are not the yucky pets you thought they might be. They spend hours during the day grooming themselves, and they love human companionship and time out of their cages to be held and crawl on your shoulder. We would like to emphasize that these furry babes are available to the right person for PETS and COMPANIONS; not anything else. If you have questions about adoption fees, or the care of these little friends, please call the shelter. *The Ark requires proof that you have an appropriate cage set-up for these pets, as we will not be releasing the rats with the shelter cage*
Stella

Stella

Stella is about a year old old, and she is so gorgeous and ready for her new home! She likes laying around with other cats. When first approached, she is a bit timid, but will let you pet her. She loves to play with other kitties! She will need some adjustment time in her new home before fully coming out of her shell, so give her some patience and a warm bed!

Jungle Kitties!

Jungle Kitties!

Adult Jungle kitties that need a home: (L to R): Berta, Iggy, and Ryder! Ryder is one of the only ones left.
They’ve got some spunk, independence, and regal beauty! We offer adoption specials if you adopt two jungle kitties together, due to their bonded nature and need for companionship. Call the Ark today!

Foxy

Foxy

Her name and her face says it all, and she really lives up to her name. Foxy is hanging out with other kitties in the common room, waiting to be adopted into your arms. She recently had her feline behavior observation done, and she really put on quite a show! Foxy has soft and relaxed busy posture and and approaches and seeks contact from humans. When she is initially touched, she sniffs, head-butts, rubs on your hand, and rolls over on her back. She loves to purr, and prefers soft, gentle movements when playing with toys. She enjoys almost all human contact (being held, patted everywhere, brushed, and more). She likes to touch noses, loves attention, enjoys purring. She is very social and oriented and calm and content to just be with people. She would love to have a structure to hide in on days where she is feeling over stimulated. Come meet Foxy soon and bring her home!

Cub

Cub

Do you love kitties who love being scratched under their chin, that have a gorgeous black coat and dynamic gold eyes? Do you like independent cats, who are content to hang out  and observe? Meet Cub! Don’t let Cub’s eye-yuckies deter you from adopting him. He is on medication right now and will be as good as new, soon! Cub recently had his feline behavior observation done. He was found hidden in a hidey-hole in a cat structure. He has soft and relaxed body posture, and in response to human presence, he looks and ignores. When touched, hehe sniffs and then backs away. We feels he may have been a little bit overwhelmed during the observation due to some of the changes he has had in his life. We feel he might respond to feather toys attached to a structure so he can play on his own schedule. He enjoys being touched almost everywhere, but does not particularly care to be carried around in your arms. He is able to be held for about 10 seconds before he starts meowing and trying to jump down. Cub will need 2-4 weeks to adjust and a place to hide. He will not be a cat to over-indulge with attention at the start. He will need plenty of chin-scratches and time!

Jack

Jack

JACK HAS BEEN ADOPTED! Do you enjoy snuggling with little dogs? Do you appreciate a strong bond between yourself and “man’s best friend?” Do you have time, patience, and a huge heart? If you answered yes to all of these, than you might want to come into the Ark and meet Jack, a loving and sweet one-year old beagle. As a young hound breed, Jack will need work on some of his basic manners, including counter-surfing, jumping, and walking politely on a leash. Although very petite for a beagle, he has a little bit of strength behind his pull! He enjoys putting his nose to the ground, and smelling his way all over the place. His favorite things to do include cuddling, wagging his tail, and playing with kitties. Jack does well with other dogs, but can sometimes be scared of them if they are dominant or bark at him, so he may need some adjustment time to get acclimated to his new surroundings. Jack enjoys being close to “his people” and will bark and howl when left alone. He likes to follow you around and look at you adoringly. For Jack’s adoption, we will require a secure fenced in back-yard* and someone who has experience with hound breeds. Please give us a call or stop in today to meet your new best friend!

Zory

Zory

ZORY HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

Zory is simply described by the animal care techs as a “sweetheart.” Come meet her today! We are accepting applications on this girl. Her estimated date of birth is 3/18/18. She seems to enjoy music, wagging her tail as our photographer gently whistled and sang to her.

Lila

Lila

Meet Layla. She is really hoping someone doesn’t judge her by her right eye that she has lost, and that someone will see the beauty within. Layla is used to being with other kitties. According to her feline evaluation, she is soft and relaxed in her body posture. Upon first meeting humans, she looks at them and then ignores them, but remains very calm. Upon initially being touched, she sniffs, butts her head, rubs on your hand, and rolls onto her back. She doesn’t respond to toys so far, but she likes to huddle with other kitties and appears bonded to another cat that we have in the shelter, who is a gray and white tiger cat. She tolerates being touched everywhere, but thoroughly enjoys being held in your arms. She is a bit shy and will need time to acclimate. She is cautiously friendly, and more at a stage where she likes to “observe” her humans rather than play. She would enjoy hidey holes. She is a nice cat who is quiet and calm. We hope that whoever falls in love with her might consider adopting her friend for reassurance.

Skud and Slinky

Skud and Slinky

“I is not mean, I just has pretty toothies.” This is Scud, who is just the sweetest thing. He likes to show off his “little” brother Slinky, even though they are the same age. Skud weighs about 18 pounds and Slinky falls behind at a whopping 9 pounds. Once you meet these two, you’ll see that they will run away with your heart, and you might even want to adopt both of them together! Please come in and meet these two Pomeranian mixes today. (We believe they look more like papillons, but either way, they are just as lovable as they can be)! DOB 2/12/19.
