Dorito

Dorito

This handsome boy is Dorito.  He is about six months old and is one of the most affectionate kitties.  He enjoys snuggling with humans as well as playing with other cats.  He would make a fun addition to any home.  He probably will do best in a home with at least one other feline.

Betty

Betty

MUST GO TO A HOME WITH ANOTHER CAT
This beauty is Betty! Betty is a shy cat but has come so far since arriving to us. She is incredibly playful and curious, she loves to chase balls rolling around the room. She shows interest in wanting to be pet and loved but still remains a bit cautious. This is why she must go to a home with other cats, as that is where she is most comfortable. She has made really good friends with George and Valerie, so while as long as she goes to a home with another cat she does have some besties here

Bradley

Bradley

Bradley is a very affectionate six month old kitty.  He just loves cuddling with people, and he has a blast playing with other cats.  He has quite an outgoing personality and enjoys getting attention and affection from humans.

Resignation of Ark’s Shelter Administrator and Well-Wishes

Resignation of Ark’s Shelter Administrator and Well-Wishes

Hello everyone! I hope your summer is going well so far and that everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather. As one of your favorite shelter administrators, I would like to announce some news. My tenure with the Ark is coming to an end as I have resigned from my position after three years as your administrator. My last day with the Ark will be on June 21st.  I’d like to sincerely thank our community and our supporters for the opportunity to have worked so closely with you all. The Ark is truly blessed to have you. What a wonderful thing it is to have been able to dedicate myself and my work to the Ark’s mission, and to be in a niche where other folks share the same passion as myself.

As some of you may know, one of my Ark “babies” has been the progressive Ark Alley Cats Program, which is a hybrid program that combines TNR (trap-neuter-return) and free-roam housing of stray/feral cats in our community. Soon, the Ark will bring some of these displaced felines to the Ark’s property in our brand-new feral cat building with indoor/outdoor access where cats can come and go as they please. The vision of this program is to reduce the population of unwanted cats in Washington and Hancock County, without outside cats living in a cage and taking up room for other cats who are more suited for indoor, adoptable life. I’m proud to announce that since the inception of the program, 18 cats have been TNR’d. Some of these cats were returned to their original property, while a few were adopted to homes as barn buddies, and some ended up in the shelter to be adopted as pets. The interior work of the building is coming along, and soon, my hope is that it will be full of cats coming and going at their pleasure. This program has been well received and well funded by the community!

Again, I want to thank you all for the opportunity to have worked with you. It has been such a pleasure getting to know you all and I wish the Ark the best in its future. Remember: Saving one animal will not change the world, but it will change the world for that one animal.

With love and well wishes to this fabulous community,

Shaina R. Fraser

Ark Alley Cats Program

Ark Alley Cats Program

Hello Ark friends!
We wanted to talk with you a bit about our feral kitty program, the Ark Alley Cats! (AACP).
As most of you know, our AACP building is now on property…YAY! Part of the Ark’s mission is alleviating over population of unwanted pets through spay or neuter, so of course- one of the biggest pieces to the AACP is–you guessed it- spay and neuter!
With that being said, it’s important that if cats are living outside and are ACCUSTOMED to living outside, our goal is to return kitties to the property in which they were trapped AFTER they are altered. Most cats, if healthy and spayed/neutered, do no harm living on someone’s property. In fact, they can provide for vermin control, AND have less emotional stress due to fresh air and environmental stimuli and exercise.
We’d like to make it clear that the Ark, in most cases, will not be picking up people’s feral cats from their property and taking them to our building. What we WILL be doing is educating the public on:
1. It’s ok for some kitties to be outside!
2. Safe trapping procedures to land/home owners so the Ark can help and pay for spay/neuter and the return of kitties to the property AND provide the traps
3. The importance of spay neuter
4. Humane treatment of feral cats. (Just because sometimes you can’t pick them up for a snuggle, does not mean you can’t treat them with kindness).
…If the Ark went gung-ho and let all feral kitties come to the building, we would unfortunately not be making a dent in the over pop of unwanted kitties because we would fill up so fast! Remember: A shelter is a revolving door and a BRIDGE to a better life. Our feral building has a purpose: To provide safe space for holding prior to neutering, healing after neutering, and a home to roam to and from the building and property for those ferals that CANNOT go back to the property in which they were trapped.
If anyone has any questions about the AACP, please do not hesitate to call Shaina Fraser, Shelter Administrator. We look forward to working in our counties to reduce unwanted kitties via spay/neuter and answering any questions you might have.
Harley

Harley

Harley is a sweet lady, but she can be very vocal when she’s displeased. She does take time to adjust to new places, but when she does, she’s a happy girl who only wants love.

Bear, Furby, and Tiger

Bear, Furby, and Tiger

These three siblings have been together all two years they’ve been alive. Though they can be separated, we would love to see them get adopted together. Bear is the male, he’s about two years old, and is black. Tiger is a female. She is also two years old and a black/brown tiger. And Furby is a grey, two year old, female.

Hark and Zigmund

Hark and Zigmund

Hark and Zigmund are feral cats looking for a barn to call home. Because they are feral, they DO NOT want to be house cats. They would need a safe, reliable barn or out building to provide them shelter from the elements, and a reliable food source. They do well together and need to be adopted together. Both are 1 year old, females. Hark is the grey tiger and Zigmund is the tri-color with only one eye.

Sirus

Sirus

Sirus is a big dog in small package! Weighing in at 36lbs, he’s a great size for most life styles. Sirus is smart and knows some commands. He’s a young guy who is full of energy and needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation. His ideal home would be with someone that would be able to continue his training. He’s working on learning patience and boundaries. Sirus is very sweet, but would do best with kids 16+ that can respect his space and help him learn. Sirus has some resource guarding issues that he’s working on with our trainer. He seems good with other dogs, but only if they like him too and can match his playstyle. Cats unknown.

Emma

Emma

Look at this beautiful girl! Emma an 8 year old German Shepherd. Like most shepherds, she’s incredibly smart and has focus. She loves to play fetch! And though she does bring the ball back, sometimes it’s a minute or so before she can take her eyes off it long enough for you to throw it again. Emma would probably do best as an only pet, she can be rough with small animals like little dogs and cats. Her hips also aren’t what they used to be, so she shouldn’t be roughhousing with larger dogs too much. Emma would do best in a low stress environment with routine and predictability.

CINDY AND HAROLD-Sponsored by Frascesca Poisson

These two beauties are around 19 years old and need a safe place to live out their golden years together. They are on a raw food diet and doing very well with it. Cindy takes dosequin for some arthritis. It’s not easy getting old, folks. They would love a warm place in the sunshine on a window sill and some love. Come on in if you’d like to meet these beautiful seniors.

HENRY-Sponsored by Jeff and Cynthia Alley

HENRY-Sponsored by Jeff and Cynthia Alley

Can you believe the sweetness and squish of Henry’s face?! Henry is about five years old and he came from a difficult situations, to say the least. Though he has been through a lot, he is a gentle giant. He’s 150lbs of love. Henry loves to play, but only for short bursts, then he loves to snuggle. Henry is dog aggressive, and chases cats, so me must be the only pet. Because of his size and needs, preference will be given to adopters with giant breed experience.

Onyx and Ophelia-Sponsored by Peter and Ruth Nye

Onyx and Ophelia-Sponsored by Peter and Ruth Nye

Have you seen these two beauties? Onyx and Ophelia are brother and sister, and very bonded. They are young, but very shy and rely on each other for confidence. Onyx is male with shorter hair. Ophelia is female with long hair. Right now they are living in a foster home and have made so much progress! They have gone from hiding all the time to coming out and getting pets. Onyx and Ophelia are looking for a home together and for someone who will show them the time, patience, and love they deserve. To make things even better, they can be bribed with food! Since they are in foster, please call The Ark directly with questions.
